POESSAYS

POESSAYS
West Meets East
and
Aristotle Meets Basho

These
little things
are
not poetry

but
a simple marriage
of
the poem
and
essay forms

Poessays
in fact

are
opinions
expressed
poetically

Water
It drops
from
the sky

into
a river

goes out
to the sea

and
up again

into
the sky

Tell
me

where
does
the rain
begin?

Kumiko Tabuchi

Delay
I want
to go
to London
but

I have
no money
and so
I save

little
by little
to get there

The
road
to London

is longer
than
I thought!

Eri Tada

Blindness
You
always
say
to me

introduce
me

to
a nice
girl!

Can't
you see
me?

Kumiko Onishi

D-Grade
Soon
it will be
11 PM
and
my family
is already
asleep

but
not me

I'm
wide awake

as
I fell
asleep

in class
today

Keiji Yamanaka

Eternity
I said
to my friend

Pay back
my money

My friend
said to me

soon

After
a few days
I said
to my friend

Pay back
my money

and
my friend
again
said to me

soon

Tell me
when
is

soon ...?

Tomoki Kimura

Breakdown
I've
spent
\300,000
on my
car license

and now
I'm broke

How far
can I get

with only
my license?

Kumiko Tabuchi

Values
It's
only
the rain
but
it makes
some
people
happy

and
others
sad!

Masaaki Karahata

POEMS

Love Letter
Dear Earth

I
want you
to know

I like
delicious fruit

fresh water
and
clean air

I also
like

the
beautiful
sky

emerald
sea

and
the bigbig
mountains

Thank you
good earth

for
everything!

Yoko Kawaguchi

Walls
I
want
to get
to know
you better

but
whenever
I'm
in front
of you

I lose
my tongue!

Satsuki Nakamura

Valentine's Day
Today
is
Valentine's Day

I've
made some
chocolate
for him

but
I can't
give it
to him!

I
don't know
his address
phone number

or
his name

Kyoko Satoyama

Hometown
Oh!
the countryside!

how
I love
the
blue sky
clean water
fresh air
and
pretty
flowers

oh
so beautiful!

Yes
the
countryside

but
can I
live there?

Where
are
the jobs?

Mizue Kakizoe

Mini-Essay

"Tobacco is injurious to your health"

Tobacco is an undesirable friend. Once you get involved with him, you can't break away because he can relieve your stress and make you relax. But be careful; he not only brings you relaxation but also death. Of course you know this, but you can't stop smoking cigarettes! Why? The poison in the tobacco has already undermined your health; if you really want to stop smoking, throw away the cigarette in your hand right now!

EDITORIAL

Japanese Cultural Values in English?

If only
for
a moment

I could
freeze
my bias

and ask
the question

What
is
Japanese
English?

Maybe
for
starters
I could say

it is not
American
British
Indian

or
Hong Kong
English

but then
you remind
me

Don't forget
Japanese
study
American
English!

I agree
dear Watson

All
the same

most of what
comes out
when
Japanese

speak
or
write
English
communicatively

are
not only
words
and
expressions
which
are a part
of American
English
but

guess what?

Japanese English
of course!

Now

this English

like
my own

is
sometimes
good
and sometimes
bad

neither
good
nor bad
and so on

Okay
I've
got it!

I tell
my friend
Dr. Watson

Why not
publish
this

Japanese
English
output

in a
newsletter
exclusively
for writers

from
all over
Japan

and see
for
ourselves

if
the Japanese
express
themselves

differently
from the

way we do?

No doubt
this on-going
language
game

is far from
simple

Where
will it
all lead?

Honestly
I don't know!

All
I know
is

we'll
just have
to wait
and see ...
